People with depression often think they are seeing the world more clearly than others, that they are the only ones who aren’t blind to how horrible the world really is. I know I was convinced of this.
But here’s the thing - the world is too complicated to take in at once. You are ALWAYS filtering. If you’re going around looking for all the bad stuff, you are missing something else. In reality, you’re just as biased and oblivious as everyone else – you just happen to have a bias that makes you feel really bad, and if anything it’s less accurate in it’s extremeness.
I have literally been in the same place in different moods, and one time I see nothing but proof the world is at terrible place, and another I see a world full of love and joy. The problem is when you’ve been stuck in a depressed filter for a long time you don’t realize there are things you aren’t seeing, and you start thinking that only you are seeing the world clearly. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.
